Can HDMI HD cable support hot plug?

HDMI, the full English name is high definition multimedia interface, and the Chinese name is high definition multimedia interface. HDMI can transmit uncompressed high-definition video and multi-channel audio data with high quality. At the same time, it does not need digital / analog or analog / digital conversion before signal transmission, so as to ensure the transmission of video and audio signals with the highest quality, so it is widely used.

HDMI is hot pluggable. In the HDMI standard, there is a pin called hotplug. After the HDMI cable is inserted into the device (such as TV), the hotplug pin will be pulled high. The HDMI signal will be sent only after the high-level signal is detected by the transmitting signal terminal (such as notebook). Therefore, HDMI cable theoretically supports hot plug.

However, this does not mean that hot plug is 100% safe. This is because HDMI transmits very high-speed digital signals. In order to transmit quickly, the antistatic protection circuit used in the design of transmitting and receiving chip can only withstand 5-8kv electrostatic voltage. Although it meets the standard, in real life, if the environment is dry and there are conditions for generating electrostatic voltage, electrostatic voltage of tens of thousands of V is common. Therefore, hot plug may produce electric sparks and destroy the chip.

Therefore, in the well-designed source end and display end, ESD protection circuit is generally configured at the expense of some capacitance margin. However, some machines do not have ESD protection circuit in order to save cost, which may burn the chip when the HDMI line with static electricity is inserted.

In general, in order to ensure the absolute safety of the equipment, it is not recommended to hot plug the HDMI cable. But if it's just accidental behavior, it's still no problem.
